A Rare Sighting: Little Bunting Discovered in the Cardamom Mountains
A Rare Sighting: Little Bunting Discovered in the Cardamom Mountains
By Vana Adventure Travel | March 2024
In March 2024, our founder, Thong Chea, embarked on a special expedition to Phnom Preah, a remote and lush peak nestled in the Cardamom Mountain Range of Pursat Province, Cambodia. What unfolded during this 4-day adventure was a remarkable discovery that thrilled both birders and nature enthusiasts alike.
Among the many bird species observed during the trip, one stood out as a truly rare and exciting find — the Little Bunting (Emberiza pusilla), a small passerine bird belonging to the bunting family (Emberizidae). This elusive species is seldom recorded in Cambodia, making its sighting at Phnom Preah a notable addition to the country’s birdwatching records.
A Birdwatcher’s Paradise
The Cardamom Mountains have long been recognized for their rich biodiversity, and Phnom Preah did not disappoint. Over the course of four days, our team was able to document a wide range of forest birds, including:
- Mountain Tailorbird
- Lesser Shortwing
- White-tailed Robin (also known locally as the Cambodian Blue and White Robin)
- Blue-winged Minla
- Mountain Bulbul
- Pygmy Cupwing
- Long-tailed Broadbill
- Orange-breasted Trogon
Each sighting was a testament to the unspoiled beauty and ecological importance of this mountain habitat.
Why This Discovery Matters
The presence of the Little Bunting in Phnom Preah highlights the critical role that Cambodia’s remote highlands play in preserving rare and migratory species. With continued conservation and responsible ecotourism, we hope to bring greater awareness to these hidden natural treasures while supporting local communities through sustainable travel.
